Description

  • Length: 7.5"
  • Wing span: 13"
  • Weight: 1.3 oz (38 grams)
  • Small black and white woodpecker
  • Black-and-white barred back, with unbarred black region at top of back
  • Black face with white malar stripe and a white stripe over the eye going back to the nape of the neck
  • Throat, breast & belly white
  • Spots and streaks of black along sides and under tail and the outer tail feathers are white with black spots
  • Males and females look alike except that the male Nutall's has a red patch on the back of his head **Top 2 photos are the Male and bottom 2 photos are the female
  • Juveniles of both sexes resemble the adult Male but with a duller red coloration on the back of the head

Factoids:

  • A small woodpecker confined primarily to the oak woodlands of California
  • Although Nuttall's Woodpeckers are nearly confined to oak woodlands, they do not eat acorns. Instead they feed on insects, arthrapods and some fruit
