Small black and white woodpecker

Black-and-white barred back, with unbarred black region at top of back

Black face with white malar stripe and a white stripe over the eye going back to the nape of the neck

Throat, breast & belly white

Spots and streaks of black along sides and under tail and the outer tail feathers are white with black spots

Males and females look alike except that the male Nutall's has a red patch on the back of his head **Top 2 photos are the Male and bottom 2 photos are the female

Juveniles of both sexes resemble the adult Male but with a duller red coloration on the back of the head
Factoids:
- A small woodpecker confined primarily to the oak woodlands of California
- Although Nuttall's Woodpeckers are nearly confined to oak woodlands, they do not eat acorns. Instead they feed on insects, arthrapods and some fruit
